Prominent Attractions of Kanyakumari







Kanyakumari is also called Cape Comorin. It is situated in the State of Tamil Nadu of India, at the south end of that country where Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean meet and that power empowers you to sail directly to Antartica. The land in and around the town are uneven which in turn divides it into two parts namely Upper and Lower Portions. In Upper Part you would find many commercial buildings, hotels, etc, while the Lower Part is occupied by native people for their residential purposes.


Prominent Tourist Attractions


Tourism is one of the main activities of the people and many locals are engaged and/or employed in shell-craft and other tourism-related activities. However native people mainly engage in fishing and other maritime activities. Its Proninent Attractions are Unique Sun-rises and Sun-Sets, Kanyakumari Temple, etc.


Spectacular Sun-Rises and Sun-Sets


Its Sun-rises and Sun-sets are unique thanks to the confluence of three oceans - the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea – which make them special and spectacular. On balmy, full-moon evenings which are called ‘Chitra Pournami’ you can see the moon-rise and sun-set at the same time - on either side of the horizon, which is a splendid visual that you can’t forget even after years and years.


Kanyakumari Temple


The Kumari Amman Temple which is also called Kanyakumari Temple is located on its shore and it is dedicated to Parvati, the virgin goddess who had taken the pains of penance to obtain the hand of Lord Shiva in marriage which however remained out to be a pipe-dream for her.


Southeast of the Kumari Amman temple in the offshore on two rocky islets you can find the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the gigantic 133 feet statue of Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar. Ferry services are available to reach the memorials.


The Gandhi Mandapam or The Gandhi Memorial


Consequent upon the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of India, his ashes had been brought down to Kanyakumari for immersion in the sea. However before doing that they were kept for public view. To commemorate this epoch-making event Gandhi Memorial has been constructed at the same venue where his ashes were kept for public view immediately after his assassination in 1948.


How To Reach


The Nearest Airport is Trivandrum, 87 km, The Nearest Railway Station is Kanyakumari and Nagercoil Junction is 19 km away, As it has a good network of roads you can reach it by taxi, etc, easily.


Local Transportation


As it is a small town you can walk down to enjoy its Prominent Attractions.
