Hallmarks of Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park has been set up with a view to protect the Endangered Specie of Wild Goat called ‘Nilgiri Tahr’ as it has been found only in this area south of Himalayas in India. Rich in forests, grasses, etc, this is located in the High Ranges of the West Coast of India in the Munnar Forest Division of Idukki District of the State of Kerala. It is in the Border Area of the States of Kerala and Tamil Nadu and in Tamil Nadu it extends as Annamalai National Park.
It covers an area of 97 sq. km near Hill Station of Munnar, 17 km from the Park.
Fauna
As the purpose of estasblishing the Park has been to protect the threatened species of Nilgiri Tahr you would find them in good numbers around 600. Other fauna you can find would be elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, lion-tailed macaques, giant squirrels, etc. Also you could find about five species of amphibians, four of snakes, three of lizards, etc. 
Flora
Flora of the region is primarily tropical ever-green forests. And as such you would find the area dotted with grass-lands, shrubs, forests, etc, The area is full of grass-lands or ‘Sholas’ which are grass-lands with covers of forests in between. 
Three Plant Communities
Three Major Types of Plant Communities that you can find in the Park are grass-lands, shrub-lands and forests. Terrain above 2000 meter is covered by grasslands. Shrub-lands dominate the base regions of Cliffs. You could find forests mainly in deep valleys and also in small patches in hollows and gullies of the region.
Anamudi or Elephant Peak
Anamudi, the Highest Peak of South India is located inside the Park having a height of 2695 meters. 
This is a wonderful place for trekking and sight-seeing. The Park has been divided into Three Areas for administrative and development activities namely the Core Area, the Buffer Area and finally the Tourist Area. You would be given entry into only the Tourism Zone which is located at an area called Rajamalai Tourism Zone.
At Rajamalai you can see Tahr at close quarters.
Private vehicles are not allowed inside the Park. You would be taken to your areas of interests by the Park or Forest Department Authorities in their vehicles.

By Road

Motorable Road is available upto Rajamalai, the Headquarter of the Park ,which is located at a disstance of approximately 17 km from Munnar Town. And Munnar is connected to Major Towns of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, etc, by regular bus services.
However from Rajamalai you would have to walk up and down on foot for around 18 km.
