Major Attractions of Mattupetty

Mattupetty

Main Attractions of Mattupetty are Indo-Swiss Livestock Project called Dairy Farm or Cattle Village, Dam, Lake, Tropical Montane or Shola Forests, etc.

Indo- Swiss Cattle Project

The Project has been established under the auspices of the Kerala Livestock Development Board in 1961.

It has been set up at a height of 1700 meters in Mattupetty, 13 km from Munnar. Over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared at this Highly Specialized Dairy Farm. There are 11 Cattle Sheds altogether out of which you can visit only 3.

Lake

Spread out over an area of 8 km and nestled on the Hills of the Calm Waters of Idukki it offers Boat Cruises. Idukki District Tourism Promotion Council, D.T.P.C., provides you with Speed Boats, Motor Boats, Pedal Boats, Row Boats, etc, at Lake on hire to undertake Enchanting Cruises in the Lake.

Dam

It is a Storage Masonry Dam built up to conserve water for hydroelectricity. It has been vital source of power for the State of Kerala yielding high revenue to the State. Large amount of water available in the Dam also caters to the needs of Wild Animals of the forests.

It also attracts elephants to quench their thirst that also quench the thirsts of tourist to see them.

Boating in the tranquil waters of the Dam is a wonderful experience. To enjoy the same you can hire various types of boats.

The spectacle of the Dam surrounded by Wooden Hills, Tea Plantations, etc, is magnificent.




Tropical Montane or Shola Forests

Shola means grove. Shola and grassland together form Shola Grassland Complex or Shola Grassland Mosaic.

Wet Temperate Forests are found in Kerala along the crest of Western Mountain Passes in the Disticts of Palakkad, Wayanad, Idukki and Trivandrum. They happen at an altitude of about 1800 meters above sea level and higher. Best examples of these types of forests are found in Eravikulam National Park, Silent Valley Park, Mattupetty, etc, of Kerala.

Shola Grassland Ecosystem is characterized by dense growth of trees in depressions and folds of Mountain Passes surrounded by extensive areas of grasslands.

Grasslands constitute about 80 percent of such forests.

Trees show underdeveloped or stunted growth due to wind section with spreading canopy, twiggy branch-lets, foliage of different colour, etc. Many kinds of endemic flora, fauna, etc, come into being in these forests with extensive micro-climatic conditions. Lower Plant Categories like ferns, lichens, etc, also proliferate in these environments.

Munnar is well connected with major towns of Kerala
