Historical Monument of Sultan Battery Near Mangalore

Blessed with Historical Monuments, Forts, Churches, Temples, Plantations of Coffee, Pepper, etc, Mangalore is a Paradise of Tourists.
Tippu has been one of the Most Powerful and Dreaded Sultans of India who ruled from Sri Rangapattana, near Mangalore. To make his Sultanate free from enemy attacks he built Sultan Battery which is not only a Monument of Historical Importance but it is also an Architectural Wonder.
Sultan Battery
It has been constructed on black stones of churches destroyed by Sultan during his persecutions of Christians in Mangalore for as lengthy a period as that of fifteen years. Located at Boloor, on east bank of Gurpur River, 4 km from Mangalore Bus Stand, Karnataka State, India, it is a Watch Tower built by Tippu Sultan in 1784 known as Sultan’s Battery Watch Tower to watch the movements of Enemy Warships into Gurpur River. Though it is constructed as a Watch Tower it looks like a fortress with elaborate arrangements for firing of cannons. Firing of cannons is called ‘battery’ and hence it is called Sultan’s Battery. Over a period of time people started calling it Sultan Battery instead of Sultan’s Battery for the sake of convenience and since then its original name of ‘Sultan’s Battery’ has lost its relevance.
There is an Underground Chamber at the Battery to store Gun Powder and there is a belief that it has a secret route to Sri Rangapattana, the Capital City of Tipu Sultan.
As there has been no maintenance mechanism in place much of the Tower has got ruined and in that sorry state of affairs only a portion of it is existing now which is called ‘Tippu’s Well’. But still it would be a good proposition to pay a visit to it given its historical and architectural importance. And if you would climb up the stairs of the Tower you would be welcomed by the Spectacular Views of the Arabian Sea and also by the cool windy breeze of the same Sea.
