Wayanad is one of the Northern Districts of the State of Kerala, India, bordering the States of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is a ’Green, Clean Paradise on Earth’ nestled amongst the Mountains of the Western Mountain Pass and as such it has got various Tourist Attractions. Edakkal Caves are one of its Finest Tourist Attractions thanks to the discoveries of relics of Stone Age Civilization from these Wonderful Caves.
How Edakkal Caves Formed
The Malayalam Language Word ‘Edakkal’ means ‘a stone in between’ and this elucidates as to how the Caves are formed by a heavy boulder sitting on the crack area of two other boulders. They are Shelters of the Stone Age Era formed naturally out of the disposition of Three Gigantic Boulders where one sits upon the other two with its bottom jutting out in between that naturally creates its roof.
Caves have Two Chambers
The Caves can be entered through an entrance of approx. 5 x 4 feet. Once you get yourselves inside the Caves you would find Two Levels, Lower and Upper Chambers smiling at you. Lower Chamber measures about 18 feet long x 12 feet wide and 10 feet height. A passage opposite the entrance leads you up to a small aperture in the roof through which you can climb up to the next storey where the interior is about 96 feet long, 22 feet wide and 18 feet high.
Stone Age Civilization
What would welcome you inside would stun you as Caves are full of drawings, rock carvings, engravings, ancient scripts on stones, rocks, pictorial figures of human beings, animals, etc. These point out unambiguously the existence of Stone Age Men and Stone Age Civilization in these Caves. The carvings, drawings, etc, that you would find in Caves are from 5000 to 1000 B.C. Archaeologists believe that these are one of the earliest centres of human habitation of 7000 years old.
Location
They are located on top of 1000 meters high Ambukuthi Hills situated 10 km from Sulthan Bathery and 25 km from Kalpetta, the Headquarters of Wayanad District which can be accessed only by one km trek trail from Edakkal.
Time required to climb up the Top of the Hill and ascend down is 4 hours.
Artworks of Stone Age Artisans
The etchings, carvings, etc, that you could find in these Caves are master-pieces of arts and crafts.. What would bewilder you would be that they are the brain-works and hand-works of the artisans who lived and worked about7000 years before you. This surprise component of the Caves attracts not only Tourists but also Historians, Archaeologists, etc, also from all over the world to these Wonderful Caves which are the New Waves of Wayand.
